[1] Robert DIMSDALE, one of the earliest physicians in West Jersey, bought
of William PENN, May 22, 1682, for £25, a tract of 5,000 acres in Pennsylvania.
He seems to have been then of Edmonton, Middlesex county England. He
came to America in 1683 with Penn. and located a large tract of land south of
Mt. Holly, on both sides of a stream known as Dimsdale Run, where he built
a large brick house and cleared a farm. Some time prior to 1686 he married
2d, Sarah, daughter of Francis COLLINS, who came from the parish of Stepney,
Middlesex county, England, and settled in Newton, Gloucester county, in
1682. In 1688 he returned to England and live for a while at Theydon Garnon,
near Epping, Essex, but in January 1692-3, he was at Bishop Stortford (a small
market town and parish on both sides of the river Stort, formerly crosse by a
ford at this place, and which was bestowed by William the Conqueror, soon
after th conquest, upon Maurice, Bishop of London, and his successors,
whence the name), in the county of Hertford, where he suffered imprison-
ment for a time, his practising without a license. While in America he publish-
ed in London, in 1684, a work advertising a number of specifies for the cure of
various diseases. He died in England in 1718. His widow soon after returned
to this country, and resided at Haddonfield until her death, in 1739.
